The fantasy and insolence of youth are captured with wildly imaginative expression in Skolimowski’s first feature. Playing the semiautobiographical character Andrzej Leszczyc, the fledgling director portrays the disorientation of a university dropout, who spends his last few hours wandering to come to terms with his estranged wife and new lover before leaving town for military service. His restlessness in view of the impending loss of freedom gives way to a film of freewheeling sensibility and raw excitement – under athletic camerawork, defiantly inventive visuals, and lightning-quick improvisation that marked a significance in Polish New Wave.
