In a Lonely Place
Dir: Nicholas Ray
USA, 1950, 93minmins, DCP
Cast: Humphrey Bogart, Gloria Grahame
When a maverick screenwriter suspected of murder collaborates with an aspiring starlet on a script, their developing relationship threatens to unravel under the weight of their character flaws, with one prone to bouts of rage and the other fearful of commitment. The noir setup and Hollywood backdrop provide the pretext for a searing relationship drama as well as a devastating critique of how conformist norms can persecute true individualists. Bogart and Grahame give career-best performances in this essential Ray title, featuring a score by avant-garde composer George Antheil.
