Inland Empire
Dir: David Lynch
France/Poland/USA, 2006, English, 180mins, DCP
Cast: Laura Dern, Jeremy Irons, Justin Theroux, Harry Dean Stanton
A successful actress, Nikki Grace, wins the lead role in a new romantic drama, but soon after production begins, her life and that of her character begin to intertwine and the framework of her reality crumbles. Lynch wrote, directed, edited and scored what would be his final feature film, as well as shooting it guerilla-style on consumer grade handheld digital video. Like all of his best work, Inland Empire defies easy explanation or even traditional definition. It is an exploration of the art-form itself, a deconstruction of cinematic artifice, a final unflinching gaze back into the abyss of a lifetime of artistic output.
