La Chinoise
Dir: Jean-Luc Godard
France, 1967, 96 minsmins, DCP
Cast: Anne Wiazemsky, Jean-Pierre Léaud, Juliet Berto
Caught by the fire of romanticism ignited by the Chinese Cultural Revolution, five leftist radicals in Paris struggle to advance their revolutionary aims. With Mao’s little red book in hand, their political child’s play progressively goes beyond sheer theatrical nonsense, as their terrorist goal turns into an action plan of assassinating the Soviet Minister of Culture. Godard extends his political rebellion into cinematic revolution, boldly experimenting variations of color, text, comic strips and interview sequences. Radical as it might have appeared, it turned out to be remarkably prophetic in light of the events of May 1968.
