Landscape in the Mist(Topio stin omichli)

  • Dir: Theo Angelopoulos

  • Greece/France/Italy, 1988, Greek, 124mins, 35mm

  • Cast: Tania Palaiologou, Michalis Zeke, Stratos Tzortzoglou

The prodigal father figure is vaporised into a myth in his non-existential silence, sending his children to an odyssey towards innocence loss. Grimly travelling across the bleak, unforgiving landscape of Greece towards the border, the pubescent sister and her little brother confront life’s ordeals and rites through surreal epiphanies: a lover’s dance ended in loneliness, and a Godlike hand emerged as a disillusion. Transcending his quest for spiritual enlightenment with poetic lyricism, Angelopoulos’ melancholic portrayal of a struggling Greece nevertheless embraces a fairytale vision, leaving a ray of light in the abyss of darkness.
