The most significant work from Michael Haneke’s early television days, this two-part drama for Austrian television is also likely his most autobiographical. Set in the city of Wiener Neustadt, where Haneke was raised, the film follows a group of characters from his generation, who came of age after World War II. The first episode shows the generational divide between a group of students and their parents in a wealthy but morally restrictive society. Set twenty years later, part two returns to the same characters to show how the scars of their youth still haunt them as adults. Closer in style to The White Ribbon and Amour than his more notoriously violent films, Lemmings contains early hints of what would become Haneke’s thematic and stylistic trademarks as an unflinching look at the nastiness of humanity and emotional brutality.
