Leningrad Cowboys Go America

  • Dir: Aki Kaurismäki

  • Finland, 1989, English, Finnish, 79mins, DCP

  • Cast: Matti Pellonpää, Kari Väänänen, Mato Valtonen

Digging into his roots in the anarchism and nihilism of 1970s punk rock, Aki champions his deadpan comic musicians in this international cult hit. With pointy pompadours and winklepicker shoes, the struggling Siberian rock band seeks their fortune in the US, carrying a running joke of its frozen bass player on the top of its Cadillac – bought from a cameoing Jim Jarmusch. In a strange genre hybrid recklessly mixing musical, comedy, and road movie, Aki’s offbeat farce is unapologetically silly, full of eccentric concurrences, and mockery of capitalistic degradation down the American road. As ironic as it goes, it brings the fictional band to bonafide sensation.
