Liberation Day

  • Dir: Morten Traavik, Ugis Olte

  • Norway/Latvia, 98 minsmins, DCP

Who would have predicted that the first Western rock outfit ever to perform in secretive North Korea would be the ex-Yugoslavian art-metal band Laibach? Known for their doom versions of sing-a-long hits from The Sound of Music and satirical use of fascist imagery, the band prepares for its gig under the watchful eye of the heavily controlled state. Co-director Morten Traavik orchestrates and documents this most unlikely of artistic coups, navigating an endless minefield of cultural eccentricity and absurd censorship in the hope of finding common ground between east and west.
