Lili Marleen

  • Dir: Rainer Werner Fassbinder

  • West Germany, 1981, 116minmins, 35mm

  • Cast: Hanna Schygulla, Giancarlo Giannini, Mel Ferrer

In an understatement and hyperbole resonating with Lili Marleen , a war-time song that united soldiers on both sides of the conflict, Fassbinder turned Lale Andersen’s memoirs into a lavish, grandiose wartime epic and one of his most ambitious films. When her melancholic ballad becomes a hit with soldiers on the battlefield, small-time German singer Willie Bunterberg is suddenly thrust into the spotlight as a superstar. But while the Nazis use Willie as their propaganda tool, her heart actually belongs to Robert, her Jewish lover in the anti- Nazi resistance.
