Little Dieter Needs to Fly
Dir: Werner Herzog
Germany/UK/France, 1997, 80minmins, DCP
Mesmerized by a split-second eye contact with the pilot who bombed his German village, little Dieter knew that he needed to fly. Now in his 50s, he was taken back into his memories – enlisted in the American Navy, he flew missions over the Laotian jungles where he was shot down, imprisoned, tortured, and narrowly escaped. In a documentary mixed with fabricated scenes and statements, Herzog fashions Dieter’s adventure into a study of a pure soul freed from the mundane humiliations. The void left behind by Dieter’s 2001 death was filled up by Rescue Dawn (2006), a fictional version of his story.
