Lost in Translation
Dir: Sofia Coppola
USA/Japan, 2003, 102 minmins, DCP
Cast: Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson
Love distills in the insomniac encounters of two people who do not belong in Tokyo. Trapped into making a Suntory commercial, a jaded celebrity intersects with a young wife adrift in her marriage, elusively connecting to each other by their alienation in language and culture. Mirroring their own life experiences – Bill Murray was transitioning from broad comedy to empathetic serious roles, while Scarlett Johansson was in search of a positioning for her fledgling acting career – both in their exquisitely controlled performances create deeply-etched portraits of two lives stuck and lost in isolation. Sofia Coppola, as director and writer, also earned acclaim for her concept and execution of these special moments of romantic connection.
