In a remote fishing village on the Isles of Scilly during the First World War, young Lucy has been kept at home by her parents as she recuperates from an unknown accident. Lucy is seen as a pariah by other villagers not only because she is perceived as bad luck, but also because of her ability to see Milly, a mysterious girl that no one else can see. With a classical 2D design and a narrative tone influenced by the films of Studio Ghibli, storyboard artist Olivier Clert’s deeply moving directorial debut aptly balances the joys of imagination and childhood camaraderie with weighty themes such as intolerance and trauma.
