Luminous Woman(HIKARU ONNA)

  • Dir: Somai Shinji

  • Japan, 1987, Japanese, 118mins, DCP, Category III

  • Cast: Muto Keiji, Yasuda Narumi, Akiyoshi Michiru

Oscillating between beauty and cruelty, the fantastical and the grotesque, this surrealist tale weaves selfdiscovery and love in a magenta-tinged Tokyo, deftly shedding light on urban decay, oppression and social inequalities. Leaving the Hokkaido mountains to find his fiancée, a burly man is soon drawn into the gladiator pits of a nightclub. Deadly wrestling is juxtaposed with opera arias and acrobatic jesters, fusing the macabre and the fairy tale in a netherworld of broken dreams and primal struggles. At once disturbing and enchanting, Somai’s allegorical feature ventures into a bizarre, ethereal realm, where love still offers a glimmer of hope amidst the darkness.
