This tragedy of mother and son shows the first signs of Pasolini's indictment of his country's degeneracy, and simultaneously the erotic sensuality and dark iconoclasm that would mark his career. Laced withBiblical references, this melodrama traces the former prostitute Mamma Roma, played by the electrifying Anna Magnani, who tries to transcend her past and makes a petty-bourgeois life for her adolescent son. When she is forced to return to the streets, her boy is destined to follow her tragictrajectory to Dante's Inferno.
