Monty Python and the Holy Grail

  • Dir: Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam

  • UK, 1975, 91 minsmins, DCP

  • Cast: Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam

Monty Python is known for their surreal brand of humor, yet the idea of turning the Arthurian legend into a marvelously eccentric kind of lunatic endeavor with a modest budget still beat expectations of silliness. For a start, they couldn’t afford horses so they simply pretended to be riding them to the sound of coconut shells they tapped together. Immortal are the Trojan rabbit, the extraordinarily rude Frenchman, the black beast of Arrrghhh, and the threeheaded knight. Winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award of the 2001 European Film Awards, Monty Python is a living proof that intelligent and inspiring comedy doesn’t age. Ni! Ni! Ni!

#2 in ABC’s “Best Comedy: The Greatest Movies of Our Time” (2011)
