A collection of mad sketches, funny songs, surreal graphics and interruptions, The Meaning of Life is wonderfully eccentric and startling as life can be. Started with the overworked old clerks in an insurance company staging a mutiny as a prologue, the film documents every stage of a person’s life, from “The Miracle of Birth” to “Death”, intermixed with religious jokes, straightforward sexism and mocking of bureaucracy. From a goldfish that talks, to the monstrously fat diner who vomits and finally explodes, Monty Python has never failed to evoke laughs as well as criticisms in their last endeavor on screen. Taking the Cannes Grand Jury Prize, it’s no laughing matter.
