Mother Krause’s Journey to Happiness
Dir: Phil Jutzi
Germany, 1929, 133 minsmins, DCP
Cast: Alexandra Schmitt, Holmes Zimmermann, Ilse Trautschold
Mother Krause struggles to survive in a building full of the tragic stories that bring to life the crushing poverty of Berlin, even before the Depression. We see the “Wedding” district as a dark neighborhood filled with lives ruined by drink, prostitution and despair, passed on from generation to generation. The old woman survives – barely – by selling newspapers, but this, too, is ruined. As life crumbles around her, her daughter, Erna, is introduced to the promise of Communism and the glories of a massed rally. But is it too late?
