My Life to Live(VIVRE SA VIE)

  • Dir: Jean-Luc Godard

  • France, 1962, French, 84mins, DCP

  • Cast: Anna Karina, Sady Rebbot, André S. Labarthe, Guylaine Schlumberger

Godard’s fourth feature begins with Michel Legrand’s tragically tender score and Raoul Coutard’s unapologetic camera that fixates on the full face and profiles of Anna Karina, as if laying bare her soul before us. With dreams of movie stardom, the lovely Nana leaves her husband and son to follow one path, only to find herself trapped as she struggles to support herself through prostitution. A breakthrough film for the married couple, who just suffered a miscarriage, yet Karina’s truthful and deeply affecting performance singlehandedly helped the film win the Special Jury Prize at Venice.
