Nine Months(Kilenc hónap)
Dir: Márta Mészáros
Hungary, 1976, Hungarian, 94mins, DCP
Cast: Lili Monori, Jan Nowicki, Katalin Berek
Mészáros’ first colour film begins in the flames of a factory furnace, immersing viewers into a depressing working-class environment with little sentimentality or affection. Beginning a new job at a foundry, Juli has to deal foremost with the amorous advances of the foreman, then falls into a relationship that grows complicated when he discovers that she is raising a son. Lili Monori gives a daunting performance as Juli, a selfassertive woman who stands up for her own freedom and decisions – the most stunning is the final scene in which she gives birth in front of the camera in real-time, the very first in the history of cinema.
