Ninotchka

  • Dir: Ernst Lubitsch

  • USA, 1939, English, 110mins, DCP

  • Cast: Greta Garbo, Melvyn Douglas, Ina Claire

Garbo laughs! In her penultimate screen performance, the somber Swedish starlet turned her hand to comedy, and was rewarded with her fourth Academy Award nomination. One of the first Hollywood films to depict Stalin’s authoritarian regime in a political satire, Ninotchka stars Garbo as the eponymous buttoned-down Soviet envoy, who travels to Paris to oversee the sale of confiscated aristocratic jewellery. There she meets a smooth-talking Count tasked with retrieving the jewels, and Ninotchka has to re-evaluate everything she used to detest, as she succumbs to his charms and the decadent pleasures of capitalism.
