Norwegian Wood(Noruwei no mori)

  • Dir: Tran Anh Hung

  • Japan, 2010, Japanese, 134mins, DCP

  • Cast: Matsuyama Kenichi, Kikuchi Rinko, Mizuhara Kiko

Adapting Murakami Haruki’s most famous novel – and one of the most popular Japanese novels of the 20th century – into a feature film seems like an insurmountable task, but Vietnamese-French filmmaker Tran Anh Hung pulls off the challenge with panache. Featuring the who’s who of young Japanese actors of its time – including a star-making debut by model-turned-actress Mizuhara Kiko – as well as pristine digital cinematography by Mark Lee Ping-Bin and a dreamy score by Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood, Tran’s adaptation brings an otherworldly and meditative vibe to Murakami’s unforgettable story of a college student’s struggle with longing, grief and sexual awakening amidst political and social turmoil in 1960s Japan.
