Pushing his confrontational filmmaking to the extremes, von Trier created this two-volume, over 5-hour-long epic chronicling the erotic life of self-professed nymphomaniac Joe. Tended to by a kind bachelor who finds her battered in an alleyway, Joe confesses her sexual history and bares her soul through flashes of her past, from the early discovery of her sexuality (‘I discovered my c*nt at age two’) to youthful tallies of sexual conquests, as he interrupts to analyse her psychic with bizarre digressions. A circus of genitalia, and a carnival of intercourse make up a teasing scrapbook of Electra complex, but all of a sudden Joe’s hyper-promiscuity turns into a total loss of libido…
