Joe’s raw honesty – or flights of fancy lies – gets tougher as she continues to recount her erotic life in middle age after the indulgence of young lust. Losing all sense of carnal pleasure following her father’s death, she finds a sadistic joy in interracial group sex and sadomasochism, yet the absurdity of her licentious pursuits feels like self-imposed punishment. Whether it’s sexual liberation or anti-sex, empathy or exploitation, drawing both feminist and misogynist criticism is just as good. But look – the hat tricker has given warnings to his narrative and thematic playfulness at the very beginning – ‘Which way will you get the most out of my story?’ asks Joe. ‘By believing in it?
