  • Dir: Carl Theodor Dreyer

  • Denmark, 1955, Danish, 125mins, DCP

  • Cast: Henrik Malberg, Emil Hass Christensen, Preben Lerdorff Rye

Continuing his late-career interest in stories about faith, Dreyer found both critical and commercial success with this domestic saga, about a widower whose family is torn apart by faith and a rivalry between two Christian sects. However, while Dreyer has long been skeptical about organised religion, he has always embraced spirituality and all its complexities, as apparent in this film, The Passion of Joan of Arc and his unrealised project about Jesus Christ. Shot mostly in intricately planned long takes that are as much technical masterclasses as they are moving poetry, Dreyer’s sublime masterpiece takes its time to plant its hooks, but doesn’t let go until its awe-inspiring final scene.
