An ode to the dreams of youth against authority, this exuberant farce is a strange yet perfect mix of childish playfulness, juvenile recklessness, and adult serious crime. Moving fluidly through the burlesque odyssey of three teenage friends who embark on rescuing their kidnapped class bully from a gang of yakuza, Somai’s mobile camera – jostling alongside random intertitles and frequent breaks for pop music – captures their anarchic energy, adventure spirit and unabashed courage as they confront the police and the gangsters. The opening introduction and the ending climax of bloodshed epitomise Somai’s long takes, bringing us into the extraordinary realm where cinematic beauty espouses the brutal reality of life.
