Exploring themes of destiny, imagination, and artistic voyeurism, Asghar Farhadi’s second Frenchlanguage drama, following 2013’s The Past , is a meta-fictional experiment meditating on fiction and reality. Inspired by Krzysztof Kieślowski’s A Short Film About Love , and accompanied by Zbigniew Preisner’s hauntingly emotional score, the story stars Isabelle Huppert as a fading author, who creates a furtive fantasy of a lurid erotic triangle through spying with a telescope on her neighbours working at a nearby sound effects production facility. When her assistant, an ex-convict, develops a dangerous obsession with her new novel and the girl who unknowingly inspires it, the fiction fatally infects real life.
