Passion
Dir: Jean-Luc Godard
France/Switzerland, 1982, French, 88mins, DCP
Cast: Isabelle Huppert, Hanna Schygulla, Michel Piccoli
Reunited with cinematographer Raoul Coutard after 15 years and looking back to Contempt, Godard orchestrates his personal passions for classical music, romantic painting, and the reflection on filmmaking around his favourite themes of how life relates to art, love to work, and light to dark. In a Swiss film studio, a Polish director is recreating in tableaux vivant a series of celebrated paintings by Rembrandt, Goya, Ingres, Delacroix, and El Greco. As Godard himself once said, ‘Sometimes one must film emotion, to fill the screen with pure emotion. Only painting and music can achieve that.’
