Peeping Tom

  • Dir: Michael Powell

  • UK, 1960, English, 102mins, DCP

  • Cast: Carl Boehm, Moira Shearer, Anna Massey, Maxine Audley

Braving to disturb moral demarcation and defy cinematic codes, Michael Powell ventures into the dark realm of overtly voyeuristic sadism. What led to his career downfall is an ahead-of-its-time perturbing chronicle of a compulsive amateur filmmaker, who is armed with his killer camera to capture his victim’s final moments before death. Peeking into his psychopathic violence through a subjective point-of-view, it makes visible his invisible traumas – his father’s tyranny, his atrophied masculinity, and his shame of impotence. A critical disaster and a masterful accomplishment all at once, Peeping Tom offers satirical insight into the deep psychological process of filmmaking. No wonder it acquires a cult following – among them, Roman Polanski and Martin Scorsese.
