The quintessential Godard film of the 1960s, made when he and Karina were getting a divorce. Lovers on the run from the boring Parisian bourgeoisie – a dominant theme of the French New Wave – becomes a constantly inventive and colourful road movie with a twist. Ferdinand flees his family with his erstwhile girlfriend Marianne, leaving a corpse in her apartment and OAS killers on his trail. The mysterious girl and her sad clown, in Godard’s words ‘the last romantic couple’, careen through crime, capture, betrayal, and cash as they steer towards the Mediterranean coast.
