Possession

  • Dir: Andrzej Zuławski

  • France/West Germany, 1981, 124minmins, HD Digital

  • Cast: Isabelle Adjani, Sam Neill, Margit Carstensen

Divisiveness and duplicity are at the heart of Zuławski’s cult classic, morphing the realism of Scenes from a Marriage (1973) into the schizoid of Repulsion. The agony of a broken relationship is unfolded in an eclectic hybridization of bloody savage and demonic alien, conceiving a celluloid canvas of intense emotional torment accentuated by Isabelle Adjani’s Cannes-winning performance of shamanistic convulsion in the Berlin subway. A viscerally acute portrayal of the human soul torn apart by violent contradictions through disorienting framing and distorted shots pervaded by horror, yet with a genius sense of sadness.
