Reconstruction(Anaparastasi)

  • Dir: Theo Angelopoulos

  • Greece, 1970, Greek, 101mins, DCP

  • Cast: Toula Stathopoulou, Yannis Totsikas, Thanos Grammenos

Hailed as one of the most remarkable debuts ever, Angelopoulos’ modernist reconstruction of the Agamemnon tragedy heralded the New Greek Cinema Movement. A real-life crime committed in a forsaken village is reconstrued as a complex interplay: of a case re-enactment conducted by the police, of a tabloid news reported by the journalists, and of the dying of the Greek traditional values under the military regime. Juxtaposing noir-inflected passion with incisive social study, the virtuoso feature, accentuated by the intensity of Giorgos Arvanitis’ stark black-and-white images, lays an overwhelming sense of loss and alienation in the deep soil of Angelopoulos’ oeuvre.
