Rio Bravo
Dir: Howard Hawks
USA, 1959, English, 141mins, DCP
Cast: John Wayne, Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson
Few American Westerns are more revered than Howard Hawks’ towering 1959 classic. Righteous Sheriff Chance (John Wayne) arrests murderer Joe Burdette, who is the brother of a corrupt cattle rancher. As the rancher’s small army approaches his town, Chance and his few allies must hold on until help arrives. Recognised as one of the greatest films of all time by the American Film Institute, among others, this iconic Western has had lasting impact, inspiring the work of filmmakers like John Carpenter and even Hong Kong’s own Benny Chan, who adapted Rio Bravo into his 2016 martial arts film Call of Heroes.
