Stakeout(Harikomi)

  • Dir: Nomura Yoshitaro

  • Japan, 1958, Japanese, 116mins, 35mm

  • Cast: Oki Minoru, Takamine Hideko, Miyaguchi Seiji

Admirers of the popular detective fiction of writer Matsumoto Seicho don’t merely go to him for traditional whodunnits. Instead, key draws include social study and the psychology of perps and cops alike. Among the many films translating that to cinema is Nomura Yoshitaro’s Stakeout, based on a 1955 short story. Two Tokyo policemen spend sweltering days in Kyushu monitoring a housewife (Takamine Hideko of Twenty-Four Eyes fame) in the hope that a murder suspect will turn up to visit. As they scrutinise the lady’s mundane life, she unknowingly sparks curiosity and sympathy in her entertainingly determined observers.
