Struggle in Italy(LOTTE IN ITALIA)

  • Dir: Dziga Vertov Group (Jean-Luc Godard, Jean-Pierre Gorin)

  • Italy/France, 1971, Italian, 60mins, DCP

  • Cast: Cristiana Tullio-Altan, Anne Wiazemsky, Jerome Hinstin

Paola is a young Italian left-wing activist burdened by her ingrained bourgeois roots and views about her family, education and identity. In order to put her revolutionary theories into practice, she has to upend all this – thus the titular struggle in Italy, as she subjects images from her everyday life to repeated reinterpretation so as to tease out her own internalised oppression and how that relates to the working-class struggle. Made for and then swiftly shelved by Italian state television, Struggle in Italy’s politics might look dated today – but its spirit remains as vigorous as ever.
