Stuff and Dough(Marfa și banii)

  • Dir: Cristi Puiu

  • Romania, 2001, Romanian, 90mins, DCP

  • Cast: Alexandru Papadopol, Dragos Bucur, Ioana Flora

Credited with kick-starting the New Romanian Cinema, Cristi Puiu’s debut feature created a road map for the movement with its blend of raw realism and dark humour. Shot largely from the backseat of a van using a handheld camera on a meagre budget, this American indie-inspired road movie follows three youths delivering a suspicious package for a hoodlum to Bucharest. It charges a high-stakes road chase with the friction of postcommunist life, where corruption, contradiction, and brutality are woven into everyday life. Screening with Cigarettes and Coffee (2004, 13’), Puiu’s Berlinale Silver Bear-winning short about two men’s discussion on capitalist society in a café.
