The Big City(Mahanagar)
Dir: Satyajit Ray
India, 1963, Bengali, 131mins, DCP, B&W
Cast: Madhabi Mukherjee, Anil Chatterjee, Haradhan Bannerjee
The first of Ray’s films set in modern-day Calcutta, The Big City is a tale of female emancipation about a lower middle-class housewife who joins the workforce and evolves into an independent woman. Ray observes the effects her actions have on three generations of the same family, even as he offers a portrait of the contemporary Indian woman caught between modernity and tradition. Madhabi Mukherjee stars, while the movie also marks the debut of Jaya Bhaduri (as the housewife’s young sister-in-law), later a Bollywood sensation and wife of Amitabh Bachchan.
