The Big Lebowski
Dir: Joel Coen, Ethan Coen
USA / UK, 1998, English, 117mins, DCP
Cast: Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi
Seemingly effortless in its depiction of laidback cool, The Big Lebowski has earned its status as a cult classic with its quirky tone and relatable colourful characters of modern idlers. Jeff Bridges’ erstwhile slacker The Dude is compelled to turn into an ill-equipped sleuth when he stumbles into this Chandler-esque case of mistaken identity and stolen rugs. Helped – or perhaps hindered – by his equally inept bowling buddies, The Dude navigates a labyrinthine Los Angeles in his blearyeyed efforts to locate a missing trophy bride, crossing paths with arrogant millionaires, avantgarde artists and porno impresarios amidst a rogue’s gallery of classic Coen caricatures, making a sociological satire which mocks the deflated idealism in the seventies.
