The owner of an IT firm hires a failed actor to play a non-existent company president in order to sell it off and leave employees jobless – this story can be a conventional comedy of office life, but not in the hands of one of the foremost tricksters of world cinema. Reclaiming the Hollywood-ised template, von Trier turns it upside down with his twisty plot, droll dialogue, weird jump-cuts, faulty framings, and wonky camera angles – all to be ‘blamed’ on the new computer programme called ‘Automavision’. But the resulting slapdash film is one with an allegorical script – satirising the vanities of white-collar leadership, or, proving the provocateur can also have a sense of humour?
