Three generations of dysfunction come together in this text drawn from American mystery ace Charlotte Armstrong. Charles is so mentally disturbed that he injures his own son and alienates his wife Hélène (Stéphane Audran). He is forced to move in with his manipulative parents, who want their grandson and blame Hélène for everything. They, in turn, bring in another couple to smear Hélène’s reputation. Yet the rupture is not only within the family but also within the entire genre of melodrama that Chabrol so elegantly twists.
