The Chronicle of Anna Magdalena Bach(Chronik der Anna Magdalena Bach)

  • Dir: Jean-Marie Straub, Danièle Huillet

  • West Germany/Italy, 1968, English/German, 94mins, DCP

  • Cast: Gustav Leonhardt, Christiane Lang, Paolo Carlini

More than a decade in the making, Huillet-Straub’s first full-length film is a perfect encapsulation of their method and aesthetics. Reconstructing composer Johann Sebastian Bach’s professional life with an off-screen narration by his wife, the film is built on extensive research and musical performances recorded with authentic period instruments and period-correct ensembles in locations. A film about – and of – labour and love, it reveals the roots of Bach’s much-revered oeuvre as assignments completed by a working musician. Still, they sound and look riveting here: boasting stunning mise-en-scène and camerawork, including a single take of the first seven minutes of St Matthew Passion, the film radiates powerful emotions in the most unique of ways.
