The Codes(Szyfry)
Dir: Wojciech Jerzy Has
Poland, 1966, Polish, 80mins, DCP
Cast: Jan Kreczmar, Zbigniew Cybulski, Ignacy Gogolewski
Bearing codes of honour existed with a guiltladen past, a self-exiled veteran returns to his hometown of Kraków after two decades to solve the mystery of his son’s disappearance. Through scraps of sometimes conflicting testimony gleaned from possibly unreliable witnesses, clear reality gradually dissolves into even clearer remnants of memory. A hero or a traitor? The truth remains indecipherable to him. Encrypted in a poetic structure, Has’ The Codes quietly explores the complex moral dilemmas of war. Zbigniew Cybulski is remarkable as a jaded hero wrestling with his own war demons, one of his last roles before his premature death.
