The domestic saga traces the emotional discord between a bourgeois, pompous wife and her rustic husband, as strife erupts with their conflicting views to the arranged marriage of their modern niece. At once exploring conjugal dynamics and class difference of the postwar zeitgeist, this bittersweet comedy is thoroughly infused with Ozu’s savour of sublime humility and simplicity in life – like the unassuming taste of green tea over rice.
