The Freshman
Dir: Fred Newmeyer, Sam Taylor
USA, 1925, 76 minsmins, DCP
Cast: Harold Lloyd, Jobyna Ralston, Brooks Benedict
College as coming of age, and Harold Lloyd as the hapless beginner trying to make his name. Modeling himself off his cinematic hero, young Harold actually becomes the running joke of Tate College, with his frantic interests at fitting in literally coming apart at the seams as he hosts the big dance. Will football save him? Love and redemption – and laughter, of course – take to the Rose Bowl field for one last chance for him to fit in. Lloyd’s most popular silent film became a wellspring of American cinema.
