The Hero(Nayak)
Dir: Satyajit Ray
India, 1966, Bengali, 120mins, DCP, B&W
Cast: Uttam Kumar, Sharmila Tagore
On a train ride to Delhi, a matinee idol is confronted with his past as he recalls the development of his career to the editor of a women’s magazine. Working exceptionally from his original screenplay as opposed to his usual practice of adapting pre-existing literature, Ray also departed on The Hero from his preferred mode of straightforward observational realism by incorporating a host of formal and stylistic touches associated with European art films from the period by Bergman and Fellini, ranging from a flashback narrative structure to dramatically stylised, surrealistic dream sequences.
