The Idiots(Idioterne)

  • Dir: Lars von Trier

  • Denmark/France/Netherlands, 1998, Danish, 110mins, DCP

  • Cast: Bodil Jørgensen, Jens Albinus, Anne Louise Hassing, Troels Lyby

Whether it’s intended as a parody of bourgeois hypocrisy or not, this dark satire, replete with unapologetic political incorrectness and incendiary philosophy, is bound for controversy. Embracing ‘inner idiocy’, a group of boorish nihilists pretends to be mentally retarded as a way to confront society and disrupt the status quo. Known as Dogme #2, made partly non-compliant with the Manifesto, this ‘social experiment’ sees the enfant terrible hover at the margins of his provocative moral premise, skeptical of the ethics of ‘spassing’ (acting the fool) yet indulging in outrageous pranks and unsimulated sex. However offensive or deliberately silly, its influence cannot be easily denied.
