The Killers (1946)

  • Dir: Robert Siodmak

  • USA, 1946, English, 103mins, DCP

  • Cast: Burt Lancaster, Edmond O’Brien, Ava Gardner, Albert Dekker

Inspired by a 1927 short story penned by the legendary Ernest Hemingway, Robert Siodmak’s muscular crime thriller was one of the few adaptations of his work that the author actually admired. Burt Lancaster, in his debut role, stars as a washed-up boxer known as the Swede, who is brutally gunned down by a pair of hitmen. Through a series of flashbacks, an insurance investigator pieces together the motive for the murder and why the Swede made no attempt to escape his fate. A classic slice of post-war noir that bristles with intimidating heavies, daring heists, and duplicitous dames – epitomised by screen icon Ava Gardner, in her breakout role as the ice-cold femme fatale.
