The Killers (1964)

  • Dir: Don Siegel

  • USA, 1964, English, 95mins, DCP

  • Cast: Lee Marvin, Angie Dickinson, John Cassavetes, Ronald Reagan

This second adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s short story was originally intended for television before it was deemed too violent and Universal released it theatrically instead. Don Siegel’s spin on the material is certainly more brutal than Robert Siodmak’s take, repositioning the eponymous hitmen as the investigators, in search of the $1 million stash stolen by their target, retired racing driver Johnny North (Cassavetes). Marvin proclaimed his inquisitive killer Charlie to be one of his favourite roles, while mob boss Browning would be Ronald Reagan’s last before quitting show business to enter politics. Yet again, The Killers features a seminal femme fatale, this time in the smouldering, leggy form of perennial tough gal Angie Dickinson.
