The Loyal 47 Ronin (Parts 1 & 2)

  • Dir: Mizoguchi Kenji

  • Japan, 221minmins, 35mm

  • Cast: Kawarasaki Chojuro, Nakamusa Kanemon

In wartime Japan, Mizoguchi was forced to explore the patriotic world of loyal samurai in this lengthy, two-part drama. Yet, this complex masterpiece omits many of the key scenes and epic activities that have made this real historical incident central to Japanese consciousness and film. Mizoguchi raised subtle messages of codes and emotions, individuals and obligations that resonate beyond wartime patriotism. Does this film turn the codes of bushido and the powers of the state inside out? Or defy war with a beautiful exercise in ritual, obligation and cinematography? (with a 10-minutes intermission)
