Set in 1980s New York City, Ira Sachs’ latest follows the time capsule of Peter Hujar’s Day with the story of Jimmy, a theatre performer confronting his own mortality following an AIDS diagnosis. Surrounded by friends and family, and busy mounting a last performance of Michel Tremblay’s Once Upon a Time in the East for the stage, the actor embraces the chaos of a creative life and finds solace in new relationships. With The Man I Love , Sachs weaves a quietly heartbreaking, intimate portrait of the Downtown creative scene in the midst of the AIDS epidemic, showcasing how love, care and creativity can be powerful paths towards immortality.
