The Misfits

John Huston’s desolate western was overshadowed – or made legendary – by the tragic fates of its lead actors; it turned out to be the last completed film for both Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe, and a poignant late role for Montgomery Clift. Their characters, portrayed as fragile, vulnerable and disillusioned, reveal their authentic selves due to their personal circumstances. A screenplay conceived by playwright Arthur Miller for his wife Monroe, this story of a naïve divorcee who encounters three new suitors is a sombre yet provocative piece, made all the more complicated as the couple’s relationship turned sour during production. Showcasing a childlike grace regarding the suffering of innocent creatures, Monroe passionately expresses her defiance against the indifference of the vagabond cowboys – likely reflecting her own frustrations with the entire male gender.
